Sustainable Seafood Festival This Weekend

COAST will be at this event giving samples (probably the kolsch and ipa) 


Join seafood lovers from throughout the state for the fun and FREE South Carolina Aquarium’s Fourth Annual Sustainable Seafood Festival on Sunday, October 21 from 12 noon to 6:00 pm at the Charleston Maritime Center.  The Festival’s Honorary Chair, Rep. Henry E. Brown, Jr. will help kick off this entertaining and educational event showcasing sustainable and local seafood. This year’s seafood selection, featuring clams, shrimp and wreckfish, will be prepared by local chefs from some of the Lowcountry’s finest restaurants: 39 Rue de Jean, The Boathouse on East Bay, The Boathouse at Breach Inlet, CQ’s, Carolina’s, Coast, Cru Café, Cypress, Earth Fare, Fish, Hominy Grill, The Restaurant at Middleton Place, Old Firehouse Restaurant, Old Village Post House, Sea Island Grill, Tristan, Umi Pacific Grille. The chefs will present culinary demonstrations and face off in cooking competitions showcasing sustainable local seafood throughout the day. Festival attendees may join in the excitement by purchasing judging cards for the competition sessions to sample the chefs’ offerings and select their favorites. Judging cards are available for purchase at $10 per competition or a reduced total rate of $25 for all three competitions.  New this year, guests may purchase reserved tables for 6 in the VIP tent for $300, offering exclusive benefits including tastings from all competitions and complimentary beer and wine for the event.

Back again for a fourth year, the thrilling High School Recipe Contest will feature 10 South Carolina junior and senior high school students vying for renewable scholarships to Johnson & Wales University. Using sustainable seafood and ingredients from Earth Fare, the students will face off in front of a panel of experts in hopes of being one of the lucky six to win part of the $48,000 in scholarship money.

The Children’s entertainment area will feature a jump castle, face painting and educational activities focusing on marine life conservation. Local children’s authors, Kate Jerome, author of the newly released The Chef Down at the Zoo and Andrea Weathers, author of the beloved Charleston classic, Hermy the Hermit Crab will be on hand to sign books.

Guests can buy fresh local shrimp right off the boat from Magwood Seafood and learn more about sustainable choices that will help promote the health and future of our natural resources. The Bridge at 105.5’s Mike Allen will broadcast from the Festival throughout the day.   Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission to the Fourth Annual Sustainable Seafood Festival is free.
